Quantel announces support for RED camera (26/9/2008)

New RED importer for eQ, iQ and Pablo enables direct ingest of r3d format files

At IBC 2008 Quantel demonstrated support for RED camera r3d files on eQ, iQ and Pablo - making the industry's most productive DI and post workflow even more versatile. The announcement follows hot on the heels of the publication of its SDK by RED.

Key features of the Quantel r3d implementation are:

* Previewing of r3d files before importing - enabling shot selection and speeding workflow
* Partial file import - only chosen clips are imported by simply setting in and out points
* Import at 4K, 2K or 1K resolution (full, half and quarter rez) with different quality options
* Full use of all RED options including exposure, colorspace and color temperature

"We wanted our customers to be amongst the first to benefit from the ability to handle RED files directly," said Steve Owen, Quantel Director of Marketing, "so we have moved quickly to implement support for the newly-published r3d format. This is our first implementation of RED support; we plan to add further features in future as we gain customer feedback."

Although direct support for the RED r3d format is new, in 2007 a Quantel Pablo non-linear color correction system was heavily involved in the post production of the first movie to be shot on the RED camera - carrying out the DI for Peter Jackson's short film 'Crossing the Line' at Park Road Post Production in New Zealand under the control of Adam Scott, Park Road's Head of Digital Intermediate - who was one of the guest presenters on the Quantel stand during IBC 2008.

RED support will be added free of charge to V4.0 software and will be released in October 2008.
