Panasonic Introduces New P2 Drive With PCI Express Interface (12/5/2008)

Panasonic today announced at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas the company's new AJ-PCD35, a five-slot P2 solid-state memory drive with an ExpressCard interface that will dramatically increase simultaneous access to P2 content on ExpressCard-equipped notebook or desktop computers. Until this announcement, P2 ExpressCard interface access was limited to a single card at a time using a third-party adaptor.

Offering the benefits of solid-state P2 technology, the AJ-PCD35 P2 memory card drive provides professionals with a faster, more convenient file transfer workflow with the latest generation of ExpressCard computers. The external P2 memory drive can transfer data from up to five P2 cards, making content immediately available to nonlinear editing systems and servers.

Using five 32-GB P2 cards, the AJ-PCD35 offers immediate and simultaneous access to more than 10 hours of DVCPRO, five hours of DVCPRO50 or AVC-Intra 50, or more than 2.5 hours of DVCPRO HD or AVC-Intra 100 content. With the recently announced 64-GB P2 card, these times will again double. This ability to expand storage capacity is another key advantage of P2 versus fixed-format systems such as optical disc and tape.

The AJ-PCD35 easily plugs into a laptop or tower computer's PCI Express card slots, making it well-suited for flexible playback or editing in the field or in the studio. It is compatible with Windows(r) XP and Mac OS(r) X and features DC operation via its AC adaptor. The drive also comes with a high-speed copy software library.

The AJ-PCD35 will be available later this year at a suggested list price of $2,200. Panasonic currently markets the AJ-PCD20, a five-slot P2 drive with USB 2.0/IEEE1394b interface, which is also available.
