Quantel announces support for more new formats - 1080P, Stereo3D, double-speed HDCAM SR, AVC-i essence drivers enhance workflows (25/4/2008)

The ability to handle material efficiently in a multiplicity of formats is one of the keys to productive, versatile workflows for post houses and broadcasters today. At NAB 2008 Quantel announced support for a wide range of new formats that will help Quantel customers keep ahead of the game.

1080P

1080P offers the highest quality HD, but requires systems to handle and deliver twice the data rates of interlaced HD. Quantel has implemented 1080P support with realtime ingest and playback for iQ and Pablo. The new Quattro release supports both 1080P50 and 1080P60 as standard.

Stereo3D

With stereo3D taking off at a phenomenal rate, the ability to ingest stereo HD video streams simultaneously in realtime is a must-have to meet tight production deadlines and make stereo3D post economically viable. The Quattro software release includes this facility for iQ and Pablo. Quantel owners can now record left-eye/right-eye stereo signals at the same time - in realtime.

Double speed HD ingest

The Quattro software also supports double speed ingest of HD from the Sony SRW-5800 deck - see separate release.

AVC-i

Quantel's new format support is not only for the high-end, non-compressed post systems. In broadcast, we're introducing native AVC-i support for our servers and connected editing seats as part of the Quattro software release. AVC-i sets a new standard for broadcast quality and storage efficiency.

P2 essence driver

A related development for broadcast is the new essence driver technology in Quattro, which allows edit seats to work with P2 media straight from the card, saving time that would otherwise be spent loading material that may not ultimately be used.

"We're sometimes asked why we build our systems the way we do. The fact that our customers can add support for all these new formats with a simple software upgrade answers the question rather nicely," said Steve Owen, Quantel Director of Marketing. "The result is that our customers can say 'yes' to any job and produce stunning results in the shortest possible timescales. That's got to be great for their business."
